Here are Inside Bainbridge recommendations for the weekend of October 12-14, 2012:
1. Pancake Breakfast & Fire Truck Rides
When: Saturday, 8 a.m.-12 p.m.
Where: Fire Station, 8859 Madison
Why: You don’t have to make breakfast and you get to ride on a fire truck.
2. Automotive Basics 101
When: Saturday, 9 a.m., 11:30 a.m., and 2 p.m.
Where: Hockett & Olsen Automotive 1278 Ferncliff Avenue NE.
Why: Here’s your chance to learn how to act cool around cars. If you’ve ever secretly wished you could roll up your sleeves, get greasy, and handle a wrench like it’s a Marlboro, the boys at Hockett and Olsen can help you pull it off. The class covers car basics like changing a flat tire, jump starting a dead battery, and checking fluids. It is part of the “Knowledge Is Power” program sponsored by AC Delco. Driving age adults and young adults are welcome to attend.

3. Friends of the Library Book Sale
When: Saturday, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.
Where: Bainbridge Public Library, 1270 Madison Ave. N more info
Why: Stock up on books for the rainy season.
4. The Owl and the Woodpecker in Washington
When: Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
Where: Bloedel Reserve, 7571 NE Dolphin Drive
Why: See the Paul Bannick photos on display in the Visitor Center and learn about the feathered denizens of Bloedel. The exhibit is free with admission.
5. Super Squash Scavenger Hunt
When: Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
Where: Bloedel Reserve, 7571 NE Dolphin Drive
Why: Take the kids to Bloedel so they can search for hidden pumpkins and gourds. They get a prize for spotting them all. Kids admitted free to Bloedel. Opening Day on Saturday features half-price admission for the older set.
6. Tracing Yesterday’s Paths to the Present: A Celebration of Family History Month
When: Saturday, 12:15-4:30 p.m.
Where: Bainbridge Public Library, 1270 Madison Ave. N.
Why: Did you know it’s Family History Month? No, I didn’t either. But now that we know, we can mark the occasion by finding out something or other about the ancestors. Bainbridge Island Genealogical Society (BIGS) mentors will be available for free 30-minute tutoring sessions to help you start your search. Sign up at the reference desk of the Bainbridge branch of KRL or email info@bigenealogy.org.
7. Intergenerational Environmental Weed Warriors
When: Saturday, 1-3 p.m.
Where: Fort Ward Park at boat ramp, at the end of Pleasant Beach Drive
Why: Hack ivy vines from trees. Student Conservation Corps, BI Parks, and Weed Warriors will help you avoid hurting yourself.
8. Table Tennis Tournament
When: Saturday, 1-6 p.m.
Where: Waterfront Community Center (formerly The Commons) 370 Brien Drive SE
Why: Show your friends and neighbors that you are the indisputable Ping Pong King. Double elimination. Prizes for the top three players. Best of 3 games to 11 points.
Register by calling the Senior Center at 842-1616. $10 if prepaid by Friday at noon. $15 at the door.
9. “We are Spartans” Sports Dinner and Auction
When: Saturday, 5:30-9 p.m.
Where: Wing Point Country Club
Why: Mike Sheehan MCs at this annual fundraiser for the Support and Safety of Bainbridge High School Student Athletes.

10. The Who’s Tommy
When: Saturday, 7:30 p.m.
Where: BPA
Why: He’s a pin ball wizard. There has got to be a twist. A pin ball wizard, he’s got such a supple wrist. Come see the kid who plays by sense of smell.
Tickets range from $19-$27.
11. Free Film Showing at the Lynwood: The Hospital
When: Sunday, 3-5 p.m.
Where: Lynwood Theatre, 4569 Lynwood Center Road NE
Why: You think hospitals are scary? Me too. Just in time for Halloween, get scared silly as George C. Scott leads the cast of this comedy/murder mystery.
12. Family Bluegrass Concert
When: Sunday, 3 p.m.
Where: Island Center Hall, 8395 Fletcher Bay Rd. NE
Why: Johnny Bregar, apple cider, and good stuff from Pane d’Amore bakery. 3 PM at Island Center Hall. Proceeds benefit Bainbridge Cooperative Nursery School (BCNS).
$7 in advance. $10 at the door.
13. Island Theatre: “The Heart of a Dog”
When: Sunday, 7-8:30 p.m.
Where: Bainbridge Island Museum of Art Auditorium, 554 Winslow Way East
Why: A dog becomes a man, or maybe it’s the other way around. Either way, he’s rude. This play is for mature audeinces only and it’s a KRL One Book, One Community Event.
Admission is free but donations are welcome.
